Benefits of Dynamic Integrated T1 over Channelized T1

Written by: Dennis Green - Dec 5, 2008

Dynamic integrated T1 provides many benefits over other forms of T1. These advantages include the combination of both phone service, as well as internet service on one T1 circuit for a price which is similar to full internet t1, or a voice t1 circuit. This benefit is especially useful for small to medium sized companies which need both voice and internet t1, but only have the budget for one T1 line. A second benefit of dynamic integrated is that it allows access to all data “channels” at all times, regardless of whether phones are in use or not. With dynamic integrated, the entire T1 (1544 kilobits per second (kbps)) defaults to internet duties. As phones are used, bandwidth is assigned in real-time and with priority to each phone conversation. This prioritization ensures that the quality of voice traffic is not jeopardized by routine data traffic. Once each phone call is ended, the bandwidth allocated to that call is returned in real-time to internet duties, thus increasing the speed of access to and from the internet. Dynamic integrated T1 is the state-of-the-art version of integrated T1. It’s predecessor, channelized t1 was nowhere near as flexible and included much bandwidth wastage. For example, with channelized integrated, each of the 24 channels (64 kbps each) which make up a T1 circuit, is assigned to either voice or internet. I.e. 12 channels assigned as voice lines, and 12 channels (768 kbps) assigned to internet traffic. With this scenario, all data assigned to voice traffic, cannot be accessed for internet usage, without major reconfiguration. For this reason, when phones are not being used, all bandwidth allocated to the phones sits idol. Although dynamic integrated requires on premise equipment worth about $4000, this equipment and installation is provided for only a few hundred dollars by most telecom providers if the customer is willing to commit to a two year contract, and the equipment and installation are usually provided for free if the customer is willing to commit to a three year contract. Other benefits of dynamic integrated often include unlimited local and long distance usage (even in metered areas), up to 5000 minutes of toll free service per month, and online portal access, so that phone features can be accessed and revised in real-time by the customer. Several providers are now offering dynamic integrated t1 on bonded T1 circuits. Also, PRI is now available with dynamic integrated. (Click here to return to top of page)
